It was formaly anounced on Friday 28th September, that the North benwel Black Residents Support Group (NBBRSG) (trading as the Milin Centre) has formaly joined the Yorkshire based Sadeh Lok Housing Group.

The Millin Centre based at 160-164 Ellesmere Road, North Benwall, Newcastle upon Tyne operates as a community based advice, advocacy and training service, serving mainly the B&ME population of the West End of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Millin Centre is an extremely successful organisation that has been active for some eight years and in doing so has developed a skilled and vibrant Executive Committee and staff.

Sadeh Lok Housing Group, whose head office is in Huddersfield, is a successful B&ME Registered Social Landlord managing some 1100 houses in West and South Yorkshire.  Sadeh Lok Housing Group has, over the last five years, diversified into a successful community enterprise with subsidiary companies carrying out development work (Sadeh Lok Developments Ltd), research and equality and diversity training (Access Matrix Ltd), and a unique community based employment agency (Up and Working Ltd).

The merger partners see tremendous opportunities for an exchange of intellectual property and expertise leading to a vibrant partnership focused on the delivery of local solutions to local issues.

Group Chief Executive, Ken Elliott, said “for some years now the Cabinet Office have acknowledged the excellence of service delivery demonstrated by Sadeh Lok as the North’s premier B&ME housing group.  We wish to join with our colleagues in Newcastle to strengthen their hand and enable them to deliver greater services, initially to the residents of the West End of Newcastle.  We will be seeking to play an active role in the renaissance of Scotswood and in doing so securing an integrated equal and balanced community across the whole of Benwell in Scotswood.

Tyne and Wear Challenge

Have you left school without a GCSE Grade C or O-level in Maths or English?
Then you are entitled to a second chance!
The first step is an initial assessment either done on the computer or on paper. The tutor will then provide you with some feedback and together you can plan your next steps. You can take as many practice tests as you like until you are ready to take the test for real.

The qualification is accredited by City and Guilds or OCR.

The above table shows a list of the taster courses carried out in the summer holidays in partnership with Westgate Community College.

The sessions had an average attendance of 10 residents per session.

Summer Play Scheme

Summer Play Sessions for young people another successful grant was secured from the Children’s Local Network Fund which enabled us to run a Summer Play Scheme for 7-11 year olds for 4 weeks in August. The Centre had an attendance of up to 26 young people from different ethnic backgrounds.
The themes covered over the course of the sessions were Education, safety, Sport and the Environment. And in the final week a treat was in store for everyone.......a trip to Alnwick Castle!

Annual General Meeting 2007 

The meeting was chaired by the newly elected Councillor Dipu Ahad of the Elswick Ward. The meeting highlighted the Centre's achievements throughout the year and in particular the funding received from the Tudor Trust for the Community Development Worker post.

A special guest appearance was made by Nargis Haq who retired as Centre Manager due to ill health. The Management Committee, staff, volunteers and users of the Centre wish her all the best for the future.

The Lord Mayor Visits the Centre

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Newcastle Upon Tyne visited the Millin Centre. They met members of the Management Committee, spent time discussing the future of the centre over the next ten years.

Councillor Peter Arnold said;

"We are very pleased to visit the centre, and to learn about the work it does in the community. The centre provides an important range of services to several ethnic minority groups in the Benwell area and we wish them well in the future".
